$480 million in philanthropic donations by Lifestyles Magazine/Meaningful Influence cover subject Stephen Ross followed by his current efforts to build a $520 million university campus

Billionaire developer Stephen M. Ross, co-owner of Florida’s Miami Dolphins and CEO of Related Companies, has long viewed South Florida—particularly Palm Beach County—as a hub of opportunity.

Beyond his real estate ventures, Ross has passionately advocated for education, innovation, and social impact, backing major initiatives that shape the region’s future.

Ross was pivotal in bringing Vanderbilt University’s new graduate campus to West Palm Beach. He hosted a high-profile fundraising event at his Palm Beach residence, mobilizing support from business leaders and alumni.

The proposed $520 million campus, set to focus on business, artificial intelligence, and data science, aligns with Ross’s vision of transforming Palm Beach into a knowledge-based economy akin to Silicon Valley.

“This whole county in the future will become what Silicon Valley is today,” Ross said, emphasizing Vanderbilt’s role in making South Florida a national hub for education and innovation.

Palm Beach County commissioners recently backed a proposal to donate five acres of downtown land to Vanderbilt, cementing the project’s momentum.

Ross’s commitment to education extends beyond Florida. His lifetime giving to the University of Michigan totals $480 million, making him its largest donor. His 2017 $50 million gift focused on student success initiatives and faculty development at his alma mater.

In 2020, Ross pledged $100 million to the Detroit Center for Innovation, a major education and tech hub in collaboration with the University of Michigan. This initiative aims to revitalize Detroit’s economy by attracting top talent and fostering entrepreneurship.

Additionally, he has been a longtime supporter of urban sustainability, donating $100 million to the WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities. This initiative promotes equitable, resilient urban development worldwide.

Ross has also invested in social impact initiatives, particularly in sports. His Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE), backed by a $30 million donation, promotes racial equity through sports. By engaging athletes, coaches, and executives, RISE works to drive social change and inclusive leadership in athletics.

While Ross’s philanthropic efforts span the U.S., his vision for South Florida remains a driving force. His influence in bringing Vanderbilt to West Palm Beach, alongside his investments in education, sustainability, and social equity, underscores his commitment to shaping the region’s future.

As Stephen Ross continues to push for world-class education and innovation hubs in Florida, his legacy as a transformative philanthropist and business leader becomes even more substantial.
