$10 million latest gift for future champions: Dr. Patrice Motsepe and Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe’s legacy of philanthropic giving surpasses $2 billion

Dr. Patrice Motsepe, South Africa’s first Black billionaire and president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has reaffirmed his commitment to youth development across Africa with a substantial philanthropic gesture.
Together with his wife, Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe, a renowned physician, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, he leads the Motsepe Foundation—one of the continent’s largest charitable organizations.
Through the Foundation, they have donated $10 million to support the 2025 CAF African Schools Football Championships, taking place in Accra, Ghana, from April 21 to 26.
This generous contribution will fund prize money for both boys’ and girls’ tournaments—allocating $300,000 to the winners, $200,000 to runners-up, and $150,000 to third-place teams. Beyond the competition, the donation will facilitate legacy projects, including school renovations and community development initiatives, to have a lasting impact on participating regions.
The initiative underscores the Motsepes’ belief in the transformative power of sports and education. Dr. Patrice Motsepe has stated, “The best investment we can make to ensure that African football is among the best in the world is to invest in schools’ football and youth development.” This philosophy aligns with the African principle of Ubuntu, emphasizing communal support, human dignity, and shared progress.
The couple’s philanthropic efforts span far beyond sports. In 2013, they became the first Africans to join the Giving Pledge, vowing to donate at least half of their wealth to charitable causes.
Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe has been particularly active in advancing women’s empowerment, health, and education initiatives, and plays a central role in guiding the Foundation’s strategic direction.
The Motsepes’ lifetime giving exceeds $2 billion, supporting transformative projects in education, healthcare, land reform, entrepreneurship, disaster relief, and youth empowerment across South Africa and the broader continent.
The CAF African Schools Football Championships celebrate athletic excellence and serve as a vital platform for nurturing young talent and promoting unity through sport. With the Motsepes’ continued support and vision, the tournament is poised to make a lasting contribution to the holistic development of Africa’s next generation.
