$371.5 million megagift to university from alumnus David A. Duffield is reshaping the scale and ambitions of the school’s engineering enterprise- raising his giving to date to about $550 million

Cornell University’s record-breaking $371.5 million pledge from software entrepreneur and alumnus David A. Duffield remains on track as the largest single gift in the university’s history, with the institution now moving ahead under the newly named Cornell David A. Duffield College of Engineering.

The gift is being framed by Cornell leaders as a once‑in‑a‑generation commitment that will permanently reshape the scale and ambitions of its engineering enterprise.

Most of the funding will flow into Cornell’s endowment, giving the engineering college a long-term financial engine rather than a one-time boost.

Roughly $250 million will establish the Duffield Legacy Fund, designed to support the college’s strategic priorities in perpetuity.

Another $50 million is earmarked for educational and academic excellence initiatives, backing core teaching and learning priorities as the college expands.

The remaining portion, a little over $70 million, will create the Duffield Launch Fund, which Cornell describes as a flexible pool for near‑term investments in infrastructure, research capacity, and support for faculty and students.

Cornell has begun to consistently use the Duffield name for the engineering college in public communications, while local and national coverage continues to underscore the pledge’s scale and permanence.

The college is highlighting four broad areas expected to benefit from the influx of resources: quantum engineering, artificial intelligence and data‑driven decision‑making, engineering for human health, and broader upgrades to research facilities and physical plant.

Commentators in the higher‑education sector now frequently cite the Duffield commitment as one of the defining megagifts to a university, noting that it brings Duffield’s total giving to Cornell to about $550 million after a separate $100 million commitment in 2025 for the expansion of Duffield Hall.
