$35 million gift to college from distinguished alumnus and entrepreneur Philip L. St. Moritz

Allegheny College has announced a landmark $35 million gift from distinguished alumnus and entrepreneur Philip L. St. Moritz—an extraordinary contribution that is the largest in the college’s history.
This transformative investment will support the complete renovation of Reis Hall, one of the college’s most iconic buildings, which will be reimagined as the Phil St. Moritz Center for Innovation.
Once completed, the St. Moritz Center will become a dynamic academic and creative hub, housing the Allegheny Lab for Innovation and Creativity (ALIC) and the Department of Computer and Information Science.
The facility will feature cutting-edge classrooms, collaborative studios, immersive maker labs, and technology-rich environments designed to foster interdisciplinary learning, design thinking, and entrepreneurial exploration.
The ALIC will serve as a focal point for innovation on campus, providing students with opportunities to experiment with robotics, develop software, construct prototypes, design virtual environments, and explore artificial intelligence, data science, and other emerging technologies.
By fusing the college’s hallmark liberal arts foundation with advanced technical resources, the lab is positioned to equip students with the critical thinking and real-world problem-solving skills demanded by today’s rapidly evolving workforce.
This investment also represents a significant step forward in Allegheny’s comprehensive fundraising campaign, “In for Allegheny: Our Pathway Forward,” a $250 million initiative to strengthen the college’s academic programs, student experience, and campus infrastructure.
With this gift, the campaign has now surpassed $165 million in commitments, reinforcing growing momentum among alumni and supporters.
Philip L. St. Moritz, a graduate in economics, was a prominent figure in Pittsburgh’s business community.
He founded and led multiple successful companies across diverse industries throughout his career.
Widely respected for his entrepreneurial acumen and community engagement, St. Moritz passionately advocated for education, innovation, and giving back.
His generous gift to Allegheny College reflects his enduring commitment to empowering future generations through knowledge, creativity, and access to opportunity.
Construction on the St. Moritz Center for Innovation is slated to begin soon, and the college anticipates a grand opening in the coming years. This will usher in a new era of hands-on learning and technological advancement at Allegheny College.
