$35 million gift from Tim and Jayne Donahue to hospital

Jupiter Medical Center’s new alliance with New York–based Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) comes as the independent regional hospital cements its status as a rising powerhouse in South Florida health care, buoyed by a record-breaking $35 million philanthropic gift from Tim and Jayne Donahue, the largest donation in the hospital’s history.

Announced this week, the Donahues’ $35 million contribution has funded a new $135 million, five-story, 92-bed patient care tower that will open later this month, expanding Jupiter Medical Center’s total capacity to about 340 beds and adding specialty floors for oncology, cardiovascular care, and two dedicated orthopedic units with on-site rehabilitation services and a clinical simulation center for training and innovation; in recognition, the facility will carry the Tim and Jayne Donahue Patient Care Tower name.

Tim Donahue, a telecommunications pioneer best known for steering Nextel Communications through a period of explosive growth and a multibillion‑dollar merger that helped reshape the U.S. wireless landscape, has increasingly turned his attention to philanthropy alongside Jayne, his wife and long-time partner in charitable giving.

The couple, who divide their time between Palm Beach Gardens and Nantucket, have supported Jupiter Medical Center for years and were previously recognized by the hospital’s foundation as Distinguished Grand Benefactors, with earlier gifts helping to strengthen cardiac and surgical services before this latest transformational commitment.

Friends and hospital insiders describe the Donahues as low‑key but deeply engaged, often preferring to focus on impact rather than visibility, and their latest pledge is being cast as both a capstone to years of quiet support and a signal of confidence in Jupiter’s ambitions to compete with brand‑name academic centers.

Hospital leaders say the gift arrives at a pivotal moment, effectively underwriting the physical and clinical platform Jupiter Medical Center needs as it joins forces with HSS, which has been ranked No. 1 in orthopedics by U.S. News & World Report for 16 consecutive years.

Under the HSS collaboration, surgeons from the renowned orthopedic hospital will perform joint replacement, sports medicine, spine, and other musculoskeletal procedures at Jupiter, using its new and existing facilities to create what both organizations describe as a premier destination for orthopedic and musculoskeletal care in Palm Beach County and across South Florida, giving local residents and seasonal visitors access to big-city subspecialty expertise without leaving the region.
