$30 million new gift to university from Milton and Denice Johnson brings their donations to school to over $50 million

Belmont University received a new $30 million donation from Milton Johnson, former CEO of HCA Healthcare, and his wife Denice.

This generous gift, announced on January 23, 2025, establishes the Johnson Academic Challenge, a matching fund program designed to enhance academic excellence at the university.

The Johnson Academic Challenge aims to create up to 20 endowed professorships across Belmont’s academic programs.

The program will match donor commitments ranging from $1.5 million to $3 million.

When fully realized, this initiative will result in a $60 million investment in Belmont’s future.

This transformative gift is expected to have a significant impact on the university:

Enhanced Academic Excellence: The endowed professorships will deepen student learning experiences and advance Belmont’s commitment to developing diverse leaders of character.

Attracting Innovative Leaders: The program aims to attract and retain forward-thinking faculty from diverse backgrounds and industries.

Preparing Students for the Future: The initiative will serve as a catalyst for transforming how Belmont prepares students for future challenges.

Milton and Denice Johnson have a long-standing relationship with Belmont University:

Milton Johnson is a Belmont alumnus and is the chairman of Belmont’s Board of Trustees.

He joined HCA Healthcare in 1982 and served as CEO from 2014 to 20181.

This latest gift brings the Johnsons’ total donations to Belmont to over $50 million.

The Johnsons’ generous contribution underscores Belmont’s belief in reimagining higher education and their commitment to supporting the university’s growth and development.
