$3.5 billion and counting: Dustin Moskovitz and Lifestyles Magazine/Meaningful Influence cover subject Cari Tuna accelerate their philanthropic impact

Dustin Moskovitz, co-founder and CEO of Asana, has announced plans to step down once a new CEO is appointed, transitioning to the role of Chair.
This shift will allow him to focus more on philanthropy, amplifying his and his wife Cari Tuna’s impact through Good Ventures and Open Philanthropy.
Their giving, rooted in data-driven and effective altruism, targets global health, poverty alleviation, AI safety, and climate change.
With increased time, Moskovitz is likely to boost funding for high-impact initiatives, particularly in AI safety, global health innovation, and poverty reduction.
Focus on Global Risks: His emphasis on mitigating risks from advanced AI and climate change suggests these existential threats will remain top priorities.
Leadership in Effective Altruism: A key figure in the movement, Moskovitz is expected to influence the philanthropic sector by championing transparency and evidence-based giving.
Scaling Open Philanthropy: Under his direct involvement, Open Philanthropy could see expanded funding and a broader scope, driving innovative solutions to global challenges.
Moskovitz and Tuna have donated approximately $3.5 billion through their philanthropic organizations, supporting causes like biosecurity, global health, and effective altruism. His transition from daily operations at Asana underscores his commitment to tackling pressing global issues.
Their giving journey began in 2011, when they co-founded Good Ventures. Moskovitz’s first significant philanthropic donation included a $50,000 grant to GiveWell, followed by $1.1 million to GiveWell-recommended charities like the Against Malaria Foundation and the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative.
Most recently, in December 2024, they donated $150 million through Open Philanthropy, funding:
$65 million for global health innovation via the Gates Foundation
$45 million to USAID’s Development Innovation Ventures
$25 million to the Eleanor Crook Foundation to combat global malnutrition
As he transitions from Asana’s leadership, Moskovitz is poised to deepen his philanthropic efforts, leveraging his wealth and expertise to address some of the world’s most urgent challenges.
