$25 million lead gift from the Pickup and Martin families dedicated to advancing addiction recovery and mental health care

Hoag Hospital has broken ground on the CareMar Recovery Center, a new facility dedicated to advancing addiction recovery and mental health care in Orange County, made possible by a landmark act of philanthropy.

At the heart of the project is a $25 million lead gift from the Pickup and Martin families, whose generosity will help redefine how comprehensive, compassionate recovery care is delivered in Southern California.

Inspired by Carole Pickup, a longtime advocate for substance use recovery resources, the gift honors her decades of dedication to improving access to care.

Pickup’s children, Devon Martin and Todd Pickup, joined their mother in contributing.

Their support ensures that individuals and families in Orange County will have access to world-class recovery services close to home.

“CareMar represents our belief that everyone deserves a chance to heal — body, mind, and spirit,” said Carole Pickup. “Our family hopes this center becomes a beacon of hope for those seeking recovery and renewal.”

The state-of-the-art facility, located on Hoag’s Newport Beach campus, will offer residential programs, intensive outpatient services, and family support initiatives, seamlessly integrated with Hoag’s clinical expertise.

Designed to treat addiction as a chronic, multifaceted disease, the center reflects Hoag’s holistic approach to care.

“Hoag’s unique integration between medical services and addiction treatment underscores our commitment to treating people, not just diagnoses,” said Dr. Matthew Reed, medical director for residential addiction treatment.

The groundbreaking also marked another major act of philanthropy: the creation of the Daniel G. Smith Endowed Chair in Addiction Medicine and Prevention, funded by the George Hoag Family Foundation in memory of Daniel Smith, a devoted recovery advocate.

“For my late husband Danny, addiction treatment and recovery were a calling with purpose,” said his widow. “This endowed chair ensures his passion and compassion live on through the work of others.”

“Through the CareMar Recovery Center, we are filling a critical gap in recovery care,” said Robert T. Braithwaite, Hoag’s president and CEO. “Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our donors, this is about restoring lives, strengthening families, and building healthier communities.”
