Hansjorg Wyss’ foundation has made a significant $25 million donation to the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston.
This transformative gift is aimed at revitalizing the museum’s presentation of modern art, marking the first major update in this area in a generation. The donation will support several key initiatives:
New Staff Positions: The gift will fund two new staff roles—a curator and a conservator—who will focus on enhancing the care, research, and display of the museum’s modern art collection14.
Gallery Renovations: The funds will also be used for a major renovation project, which includes the creation of four new galleries dedicated to 20th-century art.
These galleries, totaling 5,665 square feet, will be located in the museum’s Evans Wing and Linde Family Wing for Contemporary Art. They will host rotating displays that showcase modern art across various media and from a global perspective15.
Energy Efficiency Improvements: The renovation will incorporate updates to lighting, windows, and climate control systems to improve energy efficiency1.
The new galleries are expected to open in phases, with the gallery dedicated to 20th-century sculpture opening in late spring 2025, followed by three additional galleries in fall 2025. Three of these spaces will be named in honor of Hansjörg Wyss and his late wife, Rosamund Zander1.
This donation aligns with the Wyss Foundation’s mission to promote the arts and enable discovery, reflecting Hansjörg Wyss’s commitment to innovation and cultural enrichment.
