The University of Maine proudly announced a historic milestone in its fundraising efforts, receiving a groundbreaking $16 million gift, the largest from an individual in its storied history.
This generous donation comes from Black Bear alumnus Pierre “Pete” Labat and his wife, Catherine Clair Labat, marking a pivotal moment for the university’s athletic department.
This substantial sum arrives as UMaine embarks on significant upgrades to its athletic facilities, fueling its commitment to excellence in sports.
The funds will specifically enhance student support programs, bolster coach and staff retention and recruitment efforts, and serve as a vital supplement to the impressive $170 million gift from the Harold Alfond Foundation aimed at ongoing renovations.
A 1962 graduate, Labat has deep roots in UMaine athletics, having played football for the Black Bears before he transitioned into a remarkable career in the Army.
Rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel, Labat is a decorated veteran, receiving multiple accolades including the Bronze Star, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Defense Meritorious Medal before his retirement in 1986.
Expressing profound gratitude, Athletic Director Jude Killy stated, “We are immensely grateful for Lt. Col. Labat and Cathy’s incredible generosity and their enduring support for our athletic programs.
The Labats’ legacy will inspire our student-athletes to continue to strive for excellence and will help enhance our ability to develop champions with integrity. As a former football student-athlete at UMaine, and a successful professional following his Black Bear playing career, it is only fitting that this selfless generosity will contribute to the success of future student-athletes in perpetuity.”
In honor of this remarkable gift, UMaine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy has approved the naming of the newly built $9.5 million softball complex, inaugurated in 2023, after the Labat family.
The dedication ceremony is set to take place during the first home softball game in the upcoming spring.
As renovations continue at Alfond Arena, home to UMaine’s men’s and women’s ice hockey teams, fans anticipate improvements expected to finish by the end of 2025.
Alongside the new softball complex, recent upgrades include a new field hockey facility, with future developments planned for a modern soccer field, enhancements to Alfond Stadium, and the construction of Morse Arena, dedicated to housing the women’s and men’s basketball programs—thanks to a $10 million contribution from alumni Phillip and Sandy Morse for its naming rights.
This gift not only strengthens the fabric of UMaine’s athletic tradition but also ensures that future generations of student-athletes will benefit from enhanced resources and support.
