$100 million Ph.D. campaign puts Alfred and Rebecca Lin at the center of a new donor push at university
Harvard’s campaign to protect doctoral education has become, above all, a story about donors responding to a moment of institutional uncertainty.
When the Faculty of Arts and Sciences launched its Research Accelerator Challenge in February, the immediate goal was straightforward: raise $100 million to create 50 endowed Ph.D. fellowships.
The longer-term ambition was more consequential—to give Harvard a durable source of support for young researchers at a time when federal funding has become less predictable, and the school has been forced to reduce doctoral admissions.
The campaign began with a $50 million matching commitment from a group of alumni and friends led by Alfred and Rebecca Lin. Lin, a managing partner at Sequoia Capital, joined Rui Dong and Thor Johnson, along with private-equity executive Brian Young and Anne Young, in creating the pool that would match new gifts for named doctoral fellowships.
Their decision gave the campaign momentum and a practical incentive for others to participate: a donor’s contribution could immediately go twice as far in creating a permanent fellowship.
That formula worked quickly. Harvard met the full $100 million target within four months, completing a drive that university leaders had expected to run through June.
The money will establish 50 endowed fellowships across the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Rather than serving as temporary aid, the endowment is intended to provide recurring support for doctoral students over time, including the core costs associated with pursuing a Ph.D.
The donors’ intervention came after an especially unsettled period for FAS. Facing a projected $365 million structural deficit, uncertainty about federal research grants, and the impact of a higher tax on Harvard’s endowment, the school reduced Ph.D. admissions by about half across its academic divisions.
The reductions alarmed many faculty members, particularly in the sciences, where graduate students are integral to research labs and long-term scholarly work.
In that context, the Research Accelerator Challenge was more than a conventional fundraising initiative.
It was a direct response to concerns that fewer funded doctoral places could weaken Harvard’s research pipeline just as academic institutions face more pressure to demonstrate the public value of science, scholarship, and advanced training.
The Lins and their fellow lead donors have not treated the effort as a series of separate gifts to favored departments. Instead, they helped build a challenge structure designed to encourage wider participation and leave behind a more permanent source of graduate support.
The initiative gives other donors a clear proposition: fund a fellowship, receive a match, and help secure the path of a future scholar whose work may unfold over decades.
Harvard has not disclosed the size of each lead gift, nor has it released a full public accounting of the new fellowship donors or the academic fields they will support. Still, the early result is clear.
A donor group that began with a $50 million commitment helped unlock another $50 million from the wider Harvard community, doubling the initial pool and creating the funding base for 50 new fellowships.
The university is now trying to repeat the achievement. FAS has opened a second $100 million Research Accelerator Challenge, again with the goal of establishing 50 additional endowed Ph.D. fellowships. Harvard has said that the matching funds for the new round are being supplied by donors who have chosen not to be identified publicly.
If the second challenge reaches its target, Harvard will have raised $200 million for 100 new endowed doctoral fellowships in a single year. For the university, that would offer meaningful protection against a volatile funding environment.
For the donors who have stepped forward, it represents an investment in a less visible but essential part of Harvard’s future: the graduate students whose work powers laboratories, contributes to teaching, expands knowledge in the humanities and social sciences, and often forms the foundation of discoveries still years away.
