$10 million gift to university from Ward and Kathy Fitzgerald

Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, has received a transformative $10 million donation from Ward and Kathy Fitzgerald, aimed at equipping students for impactful careers in the political and cultural spheres of Washington, D.C. This generous gift has established the Franciscan University Homeland Mission (FUHM)—a strategic initiative designed to prepare, connect, and engage students with the nation’s capital.
A significant portion of the donation has been used to purchase a $3 million property on Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, D.C., which will serve as the headquarters for FUHM. This facility will act as a hub for students and faculty participating in the program, providing a base for networking, mentorship, and hands-on experience in government, media, technology, healthcare, and other influential industries.
FUHM is a key component of the Franciscan University Encounter initiative, which seeks to extend the university’s mission beyond its Steubenville campus, bringing its faith-driven education into the heart of national discourse.
“What we want to do is take all of the great things that we’re doing on our hilltop campus in Ohio and bring it out into the world. Through Franciscan University Encounter and the Homeland Mission in Washington, D.C., we’re giving students the opportunity to apply their learning in practical, real-world settings.”
— Stephen Catanzarite, Executive Director of Encounter, Franciscan University
President of Franciscan University, Father Dave Pivonka, emphasized the broader vision of the initiative:
“Franciscan University is this little city on the hill. Now, we’re coming to another hill—Capitol Hill. Our goal is to have as many students as possible come through the Franciscan University Homeland Mission, engage with policymakers, media leaders, and industry experts, and bring the light of faith into these critical spaces. At the same time, they will be shaped by these experiences, gaining insights that will prepare them for meaningful careers and service.”
