Greece’s top bankers have announced a major donation to strengthen the country’s leading public universities.

Through the Hellenic Bank Association, the four systemic banks — Alpha Bank, Eurobank, National Bank of Greece, and Piraeus Bank — are committing roughly $182 million for facility upgrades across three institutions. Of that total, about $148 million is earmarked for the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, marking one of the largest academic gifts there in decades.

The announcement was made during a meeting at the Maximos Mansion chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with university rectors in attendance.

While the gift comes from the banks as a group, it reflects the leadership and initiative of several senior executives.

Giorgos (George) Zanias, Chairman of Eurobank and a key figure in the Hellenic Bank Association, stands out as one of the driving forces.

An economist and professor emeritus with ties to the American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce, Zanias brings both academic insight and international perspective to the effort.

Vasilios Rapanos, Chairman of Alpha Bank and a former Bank Association leader, has also played an important role. Working alongside the chairmen and CEOs of the other major banks, they helped coordinate this significant collective commitment.

The funds will support much-needed refurbishments, infrastructure improvements, and modernization at the University of Athens and two other top schools. University of Athens Rector Professor Gerasimos Siasos welcomed the donation as transformative for the institution.

When combined with previous contributions, the banks have now directed more than $638 million toward higher education initiatives.

This gift highlights how Greece’s financial leaders are investing in the country’s long-term future through education. It also carries a subtle international dimension through Zanias’s connections to Greek-American business networks.

As implementation plans develop, the donation is expected to deliver lasting benefits to students, faculty, and Greece’s higher education system overall.
