$75 million gift caps historic moment for research university, boosting athletics and honors college

Virginia Tech President Tim Sands has announced the largest philanthropic commitment in the university’s history, a $75 million gift that will primarily support athletics and also expand the Honors College.

According to the university, the commitment comes from an anonymous four-generation Hokie family, with the majority of the funding earmarked for Virginia Tech Athletics and a significant portion directed to the Honors College.

On the athletics side, the gift will bolster the school’s Invest to Win initiative, with a large share endowed to create a stable, long‑term source of support.

Additional money will be provided as unrestricted resources for the athletic director to use at his discretion, and some support will be administered through Hokie Ventures, a new affiliation approved by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors on June 2.

The Honors College allocation will advance work inspired by the Calhoun Honors Discovery Program, an immersive undergraduate experience launched in 2018 with a $20 million gift from alumnus David Calhoun.

“This historic commitment reflects extraordinary confidence in Virginia Tech’s rising potential in athletics and impactful scholarship,” Sands said in a statement, calling it an “unprecedented investment at a pivotal moment” for the institution.

Director of Athletics Whit Babcock described the donation as a “powerful statement” about the future of Virginia Tech sports and the impact of the Invest to Win plan and Hokie Ventures, saying the gift will accelerate momentum, strengthen support for student‑athletes and coaches, and create “transformational opportunities for generations of Hokies to come.”

The $75 million commitment surpasses Virginia Tech’s previous record gifts of $50 million announced in 2018, 2021, and 2023, and exceeds the prior largest commitment to athletics, a $20 million anonymous gift announced in December 2025.
