$50 million new gift from Rika and Joe Mansueto to university brings their total giving to school to $117 million, aims to advance AI-driven scholarship across disciplines
In a significant boost to interdisciplinary artificial intelligence efforts in higher education, University of Chicago alumni Rika and Joe Mansueto have donated $50 million to launch the Mansueto Faculty of Mind and Machine Challenge.
The gift aims to raise nearly $200 million overall to recruit, retain, and support 20 leading scholars who integrate computational thinking and AI across diverse fields—from oncology and economics to visual arts, law, and the humanities.
The initiative builds on UChicago’s existing AI Initiative, which funds faculty-led research projects ranging from cancer diagnostics to artistic creation, as well as pedagogical experiments that explore both integrating and deliberately limiting AI in teaching.
Rather than isolating AI in computer science or engineering, the program embeds it university-wide, encouraging new questions while centering human intelligence, creativity, responsibility, and judgment.
Supported faculty may hold joint appointments in computer science, mathematics, or statistics, advancing a holistic approach to discovery in the AI era.
President Paul Alivisatos called it “a signal period in intellectual history,” praising the Mansuetos’ belief in UChicago’s tradition of rigorous, cross-disciplinary inquiry and intellectual freedom.
Rika Mansueto emphasized grounding AI in “a deep understanding of human judgment, responsibility, and purpose,” while Joe noted that breakthroughs will arise from institutions asking bigger questions about intelligence, human–machine interaction, and responsible innovation.
Joe Mansueto founded Morningstar in 1984 from his kitchen table; he remains executive chairman of the global investment research firm.
With an estimated net worth of around $4.6 billion, he also owns Mansueto Ventures (publisher of Inc. and Fast Company), the Wrigley Building, and Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire FC, where he is funding a new privately financed soccer-specific stadium expected to open in 2028.
Rika, who studied anthropology, has focused on philanthropy, education, and civic leadership and has served on UChicago’s Board of Trustees.
The couple’s cumulative giving to the university now exceeds $117 million. Landmark gifts include $25 million for the iconic Joe and Rika Mansueto Library—featuring its soaring glass dome and automated storage system—and $35 million to establish the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation. They also signed the Giving Pledge in 2010, committing most of their wealth to philanthropy.
The challenge grant seeks to attract additional donors inspired by UChicago’s distinctive model, which prioritizes fundamental questions over purely technical advances. In a competitive market for AI talent, the program positions the university to shape AI’s societal impact through rigorous scholarship that advances human flourishing.
With this $50 million gift, the Mansuetos extend their enduring commitment to the University of Chicago’s tradition of human-centered inquiry.
Building on decades of investment in faculty excellence and institutional vision, their support helps UChicago lead responsibly in guiding technological change—continuing the Mansuetos’ legacy of bold inquiry and lasting impact.
