$12 million gift from alumnus Sheridan Albert reshapes law school’s academic life and reinforces its role as a hub for legal innovation through named professorships

Brooklyn Law School is highlighting a record-setting $12 million gift from alumnus Sheridan Albert that is reshaping its academic life and reinforcing its role as a hub for legal innovation in New York City.

The donation, the largest single contribution in the school’s 124-year history, is currently funding three endowed professorships that expand faculty excellence and deepen the school’s engagement with pressing legal and policy issues.

The gift has already established three named professorships, including the Sheridan Albert Professorship of Law, held by corporate governance scholar Sarah Haan, whose work examines shareholder rights, money in politics, and the law of capitalism.

These chairs, together with a fourth professorship created through a separate legacy gift, are enabling Brooklyn Law School to recruit and retain top scholars whose research and teaching directly shape students’ understanding of business law, civil rights, and the criminal legal system today.

Leaders at Brooklyn Law School say the gift is helping the institution double down on its commitment to legal education rooted in New York City’s real-world challenges, from corporate power and financial regulation to public safety and civil rights.

Through the new professorships, the school is positioning faculty at the forefront of national conversations on corporate governance, criminal justice reform, and the future of capitalism, ensuring that students are learning in direct conversation with the most current debates shaping law and policy.
