$145 million in major gifts to date by philanthropists William A. “Bill” and Carolyn Franke ensure accessible, high-impact education

The W.A. Franke Honors College at the University of Arizona stands as a thriving testament to philanthropist William A. “Bill” Franke’s vision of accessible, high-impact education.

The college, renamed earlier following his family’s $25 million gift—the largest single donation to the university’s honors program—continues to expand its reach.

The most current angle on Franke’s philanthropic influence centers on the ongoing ripple effects of his donation, amplified by recent milestones and recognitions.

In 2025, Franke delivered the convocation address to the college’s largest graduating class to date—over 500 undergraduates earning bachelor’s degrees with honors—in McKale Memorial Center.

During the University of Arizona’s broader commencement ceremonies, he received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, recognizing his role in elevating student opportunities through scholarships, housing stipends for the Honors Village, study abroad funding, endowed faculty positions, and innovative programs that prioritize first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented scholars.

This honor and active participation underscore Franke’s enduring personal engagement with the institution bearing his name.

As the college pursues its ambitious $48 million fundraising goal to further bridge gaps in faculty support, student resources, and programmatic expansion, Franke’s foundational gift remains the cornerstone.

Recent developments within the college highlight sustained momentum: in September 2025, the establishment of the Benjamin and Andrea Driggs Honors Travel Quest Endowment expanded research and presentation travel opportunities for honors students.

In December 2025, Franke Honors representatives presented successes at the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) Conference, showcasing strategies in honors education.

Early 2026 news included naming Benjamin Driggs as the 2025-26 Alumni of the Year for embodying the college’s mission through contributions and accomplishments.

The fall 2025 convocation in December celebrated awardees who exemplify the values of Seek, Connect, Create, Evolve, and Celebrate.

Franke’s philanthropy, shared with wife Carolyn and family, including sons David and Brian, consistently targets education and health institutions serving diverse, underserved populations.

The 2021 UArizona gift aligned with prior patterns: $25 million to Northern Arizona University’s business college (now W.A. Franke College of Business), $24 million to the University of Montana’s forestry programs, $25 million each to Mayo Clinic School of Medicine in Arizona and Stanford Law School (his alma mater), and $21 million to Barrow Neurological Institute for global neuroscience education.

Born in Texas, Franke’s international upbringing—his first flight at age 11, and childhood in Paraguay and Argentina—fostered a global outlook that informed his career. After Stanford degrees (B.A. and LL.B., 1961), he excelled in corporate turnarounds before pioneering low-cost models at America West Airlines (chairman 1992–2001, CEO 1993–2001).

Indigo Partners, founded in 2002, now controls or holds stakes in Frontier, Wizz Air, Volaris, JetSMART, and others, with Franke’s strategies—including massive Airbus orders—that are democratizing air travel.

The Frankes maintain a low-profile life in Paradise Valley, Arizona, favoring impact over spotlight.

Yet 2025’s convocation role and honorary degree for Franke reaffirm his commitment: opportunity as a multiplier. As one recent college announcement noted, these investments fuel wonder, enabling students to innovate and lead.

With Frontier navigating its new chapter under Dempsey and the Honors College marking fresh achievements in early 2026, Franke’s dual worlds converge on accessibility—whether in affordable flights or empowered futures, assuring his influence soars into the next generation.
