$100 million gifted to date to cancer center from philanthropists Stuart and Molly Sloan

In a powerful affirmation of their longstanding commitment to cancer research and patient care, Seattle philanthropists Stuart and Molly Sloan have made a $100 million gift to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.
The donation—an increase from their previous $78 million gift in September 2022—ranks among the largest in the institution’s history and underscores a growing wave of private philanthropy propelling the center’s ambitious expansion efforts.
This enhanced commitment will support major initiatives at Fred Hutch, including advancing cutting-edge cancer research, expanding access to high-quality clinical care, and accelerating the center’s growth in facilities and programming.
In recognition of their extraordinary support, Fred Hutch will name its primary outpatient clinic the Stuart and Molly Sloan Clinic—a symbolic and enduring tribute to the couple’s impact.
The Sloans have long been active in the Seattle philanthropic community. Stuart Sloan, a former chairman and CEO of Quality Food Centers (QFC), has been a key business and civic leader in the Pacific Northwest.
His and Molly’s interest in Fred Hutch stems from a deep personal commitment to healthcare innovation and improving outcomes for cancer patients. Their giving is part of a broader philanthropic strategy focused on transformative impact and institutional capacity-building.
The gift comes amid a period of strategic growth for Fred Hutch, following its 2022 merger with Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. This integration created a unified adult cancer care and research center under the Fred Hutch name, positioning the organization to become one of the nation’s preeminent cancer research institutions.
The Sloans’ $100 million gift, while historic, follows another groundbreaking contribution: a $710.5 million donation from the Bezos family—also in 2022. That record-breaking gift, one of the largest ever to a U.S. cancer center, is funding the recruitment of 36 new research scientists, expansion of clinical trial capacity, construction of new laboratory and outpatient facilities, and support for pioneering immunotherapy research.
Together, the Bezos and Sloan gifts signal a significant increase in private philanthropic support for Fred Hutch’s mission. The center is currently engaged in a bold campaign to advance precision oncology, develop immunotherapies, and expand access to care across the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
Dr. Thomas Lynch, president and director of Fred Hutch, emphasized the significance of the Sloan gift: “Stuart and Molly have been unwavering in their support of Fred Hutch, and this transformative gift reflects their visionary leadership. Their generosity will directly benefit patients and fuel research breakthroughs that could change the course of cancer treatment for generations to come.”
With these landmark gifts, Fred Hutch is positioning itself not only as a leader in cancer research and care but also as a model for how philanthropy can catalyze scientific innovation and expand access to life-saving treatments.
