$60 million latest donation from Lifestyles Magazine/Meaningful Influence cover subject philanthropist Peter Gilgan follows his earlier gift of $225 million to healthcare institutions

Philanthropist and business leader Peter Gilgan, featured recently on the cover of Lifestyles Magazine/Meaningful Influence, focusing on this extraordinary $225 million to healthcare has made history with another, new record-setting $60 million donation to St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto.
The gift—his most personal to date—will fund the construction of a state-of-the-art patient tower and dramatically transform health care delivery in the city’s west end.
Born at St. Joseph’s and one of seven siblings who first entered the world within its walls, Gilgan’s ties to the hospital are profound.
His latest donation brings his total contributions to St. Joe’s to more than $70 million, and to over $100 million across Unity Health Toronto’s network, which includes St. Michael’s Hospital and Providence Healthcare.
“This gift is deeply personal,” said Gilgan, founder and CEO of Mattamy Asset Management. “West Toronto is close to my heart. I’m proud to support this transformation so St. Joe’s can continue caring for families like mine for the next century.”
Gilgan’s support is the cornerstone of the new tower project, which will expand emergency and surgical capacity, enhance mental health care, and integrate cutting-edge technologies such as AI to meet the growing needs of the diverse west-end population.
Unity Health CEO Dr. Tim Rutledge called the gift “incredible,” praising Gilgan’s vision and commitment to the future of healthcare.
mariahPremier Doug Ford noted the donation would help serve more patients than ever and strengthen Ontario’s healthcare system for future generations.
The Ontario government echoed this sentiment, citing the donation as a key complement to its own $1 billion investment in expanding the facility. Infrastructure Minister Kinga Surma said it reflects both public and private commitment to protecting Ontario’s economic and healthcare resilience.
“This is a historic moment for St. Joe’s,” said Maria Dyck, President and CEO of the St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation. “Peter’s extraordinary gift builds on the momentum created by thousands of donors who believe in what’s possible here.”
Diane Kazarian, Chair of the Foundation’s Board, noted, “As a builder of communities, Peter understands the health care these communities need to thrive.”
The new patient tower—expected to be named in Gilgan’s honor—will stand as a beacon of compassionate, high-quality, community-centered care and an enduring symbol of giving back.
