$50 million lead gift from Chris Malachowsky aiming to revolutionize AI research and education

In a groundbreaking move, the University of Florida (UF) announced a $70 million partnership with Nvidia to revolutionize artificial intelligence (AI) research and education.

A $70 million-dollar partnership between UF and Nvidia aims to create the world’s fastest AI supercomputer in higher education.

The initiative includes a $25 million gift from Nvidia co-founder Chris Malachowsky and $25 million in hardware, software, training, and services from Nvidia.

An additional $20 million investment from UF will enhance the project.

The initiative aims to make AI accessible across UF’s campus, benefit underrepresented communities, and bolster industry and economic growth across the state.

The partnership between UF and Nvidia is poised to place the university at the forefront of AI research and education. With a $50 million gift from Chris Malachowsky and Nvidia, complemented by a $20 million contribution from UF, the project is set to establish an AI-centric data center. This center will house the world’s fastest AI supercomputer in higher education, significantly advancing UF’s research capabilities in addressing global challenges.

The partnership aims not only to enhance UF’s research capabilities but also to make AI tools and training accessible to a broad audience, including underrepresented communities. The initiative promises to integrate AI across all disciplines at UF, offering certificates and degree programs in AI and data science. This interdisciplinary approach is expected to address major societal challenges, from healthcare to urban transportation, through innovative AI applications.

At the heart of this initiative is the collaboration between UF and Nvidia, leveraging Nvidia’s expertise in AI and accelerated computing. The project will see the integration of 140 Nvidia DGX A100 systems, delivering unprecedented AI performance.

Furthermore, Nvidia’s commitment extends beyond hardware, offering AI expertise, curriculum development, and the establishment of an Nvidia AI Technology Center at UF.

The partnership between the University of Florida and Nvidia represents a significant leap towards integrating artificial intelligence into higher education and research.
