$25 million gift from the Smith family is shaping the next chapter of arboretum

A transformational $25 million gift from the Smith family is shaping the next chapter of the Arboretum at Penn State, strengthening a tradition of generosity that has supported its growth from the very beginning.

This new commitment brings the Smith family’s total support for the Arboretum to over $43 million, ensuring that Penn State’s beloved landscape will continue to flourish for years to come.

Charles H. “Skip” Smith, a Penn State alumnus and longtime business leader in State College, launched the Arboretum in 2007 with a significant $10 million investment.

Building on that foundation, the Smith family’s latest gift focuses on supporting everyday operations, maintaining gardens and infrastructure, and sparking future giving from other families and friends.

Their generosity has created many of the Arboretum’s most cherished spaces, including gardens designed to inspire and nurture the community, as well as the newly announced Soaring Waters Fountain Garden, a landmark feature set to open in 2026.

The Smith family’s commitment reflects a deep appreciation for nature and a desire to honor their roots while providing an open, welcoming space for everyone to experience the beauty and serenity of the outdoors.

Today, the Arboretum welcomes over 250,000 visitors annually and serves as a hub for learning, community gatherings, and peaceful reflection.

Through the Smith family’s ongoing support, the Arboretum is positioned to grow, inspire, and enrich the Penn State community for generations to come.
