$10 million gift to local hospital from Richard S. ‘Steve’ Jenkins, Carole C. Jenkins, and their fifth-generation family

Tampa General Hospital has announced a landmark $10 million gift from the Jenkins Charitable Foundation, funding the creation of the Jenkins Family Hybrid Operating Room at TGH’s Davis Islands campus.

This advanced facility will combine a state-of-the-art surgical environment with high-tech imaging, significantly expanding care for patients with complex vascular disease. Hospital leaders, including President and CEO John Couris, describe the project as a major step forward for world-class care in the region, highlighting how the hybrid OR streamlines procedures and improves patient outcomes.

The Jenkins family’s deep ties to Tampa trace back five generations, including the founding of Beach Pharmaceuticals in 1957 by Richard B. Jenkins.

The family’s continued legacy in science and technology—and their commitment to the Tampa community—are reflected in the leadership roles of Richard S. “Steve” Jenkins (President), Carole C. Jenkins (Treasurer/Director), and Laura Larocca (Secretary) at the Jenkins Charitable Foundation.

Dr. Jean Bismuth, chief of Vascular Surgery at TGH, underscored the transformative impact, calling the hybrid OR a “game-changer” for vascular treatment across the Tampa Bay community.

The donation is part of the hospital’s Elevating Excellence: Innovating Tomorrow’s TGH campaign and will help bring advanced care to patients sooner than expected.

Additional hybrid ORs are also planned as part of the forthcoming Taneja Surgical, Neuroscience & Transplant Tower, currently under construction.

Steve Jenkins summarized the family’s motivation: “Our family has witnessed the quality services provided by Tampa General, and it is our desire to help ensure that TGH has the necessary tools to attract the best leaders, researchers, and physicians in their fields. We are honored to be able to contribute to the ongoing success of Tampa General.”
