$15 million new gift from Kenneth C. Griffin to National Constitution Center will support the creation of a new gallery on America’s founding principles

Billionaire philanthropist Ken Griffin, founder and CEO of Citadel, has made a historic $15 million donation to the National Constitution Center—the largest gift in the organization’s history.

The donation will fund two major new exhibits celebrating America’s founding principles, timed to open ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

As part of the gift, Griffin will also loan two rare historical documents:

His first-edition printing of the U.S. Constitution, one of only 14 known official copies printed for delegates of the 1787 Constitutional Convention, which he acquired at auction in 2021 for $43.2 million.

A previously undisclosed first printing of the 17 constitutional amendments proposed by the House in 1789, which would become the foundation for the U.S. Bill of Rights.

Griffin’s loan ensures both documents will be on public display through 2026 at the Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

“The remarkable prosperity of America over the past 250 years is a testament to the genius of the republic, as enshrined in our Constitution,” said Griffin. “I am proud to partner with the National Constitution Center to share these sacred documents with all Americans.”

The $15 million new donation will support the creation of two new permanent galleries: one dedicated to America’s founding principles and another exploring separation of powers and federalism. Construction is set to begin in June 2025, with the exhibits opening in early and mid-2026, respectively.

In recognition of his gift, the Center’s central gathering space will be renamed the Kenneth C. Griffin Great Hall, offering panoramic views of Independence Mall.

“This is a transformative opportunity,” said Jeffrey Rosen, CEO of the Constitution Center. “Ken Griffin’s generosity will allow us to tell the story of America’s founding in a profoundly engaging and inspiring way.”

Griffin’s contribution comes amid national reflection and debate around the Constitution’s role in modern governance. The Center, a nonpartisan nonprofit, aims to foster civic understanding and dialogue by bringing together diverse perspectives across the political spectrum.

Griffin’s civic philanthropy spans education, science, freedom and democracy, and civic engagement. He recently supported the opening of the National Medal of Honor Museum and continues to champion initiatives that promote opportunity and preserve the American Dream.

“Ken loves America and has shown an extraordinary commitment to our founding principles,” said Cason Carter, head of public affairs for Citadel. “His support reflects a deep belief that the Constitution—and the freedoms it protects—should be accessible to every generation.”
